1. Health insurance transfers part of medical-cost risk

You pay premium to an insurer in exchange for covered medical benefits under the policy terms. It does not mean every medical expense is automatically paid.

Tip: The policy wording defines what is covered.

2. Sum insured is not the only important number

Waiting periods, exclusions, room-rent rules, co-pay, deductibles, network hospitals and sub-limits can materially change claim outcomes.

Tip: A ₹10 lakh cover can behave very differently across policies.

3. Cashless and reimbursement are claim methods

Cashless claims use network processes where eligible. Reimbursement means you pay and claim later with required documents.

Tip: Cashless does not mean every bill item is automatically covered.

4. Buy before health deteriorates where possible

Waiting periods and underwriting mean insurance is easier to use when purchased before a known medical crisis. Review family needs and employer-cover dependence.

Note: Employer insurance can disappear when the job changes.

5. Quick check

Does a ₹10 lakh sum insured mean every hospital bill up to ₹10 lakh will always be paid?
