1. Both can be legitimate regulated lenders
Banks and RBI-regulated NBFCs can both lend within their permitted activities. The useful comparison is between specific products, not stereotypes about the institution type.
2. Underwriting and customer focus can differ
Banks may be generalists while NBFCs can specialise in used vehicles, gold, small businesses or consumer finance. This can change eligibility and turnaround time.
3. Cost can differ in either direction
Compare APR, processing fees, insurance, valuation, net disbursal and total repayment. Neither the word “bank” nor “NBFC” guarantees the lower price.
4. Service and recovery terms matter
Check grievance channels, repayment methods, prepayment rules and collateral-release procedures. Use only verified lender and payment channels.
5. Quick check
An NBFC has a slightly higher nominal rate but much lower mandatory fees. What should you compare?
