1. All three move money, but the rails are different
NEFT, RTGS and IMPS can all move money between bank accounts, but they are different payment systems with different processing models and rules. The right choice depends on urgency, transfer amount, recipient details and what your bank allows through that channel.
2. NEFT is a broad electronic funds-transfer system
NEFT processes transfers through a nationwide system available round the clock. Transactions are processed in settlement batches rather than as one individual gross settlement for each instruction. It is widely used for routine account-to-account transfers. Your bank can still impose channel-specific transaction controls.
3. RTGS settles eligible transfers individually in real time
RTGS stands for Real Time Gross Settlement. “Real time” means eligible instructions are processed as they arrive, and “gross” means they are settled individually rather than netted together. RTGS is designed for higher-value transfers and has a regulatory minimum transfer amount. Banks may also have their own channel rules and customer limits.
4. IMPS is built for instant retail transfers
IMPS provides immediate interbank transfer capability and is available round the clock through participating channels. It is commonly used for urgent retail transfers. Limits, charges and availability can depend on your bank and channel. A fast transfer to the wrong account is still a problem.
5. Quick check
You need a high-value bank transfer with individual real-time settlement. Which rail is designed for that purpose?
