1. Processing fee is a loan-origination cost
A processing fee can be flat or percentage-based and is separate from interest. It pays for processing or setting up the loan under the lender's policy.
2. It can reduce the cash you receive
If the fee and applicable taxes are deducted before disbursal, a ₹3 lakh sanction can put less than ₹3 lakh into your account even though the repayment schedule is built around the sanctioned loan structure.
3. Refund rules matter before you pay
Refundability if a loan is rejected or cancelled depends on disclosed terms. Never send an online “processing fee” to an unverified person's UPI or bank account.
4. Processing fee belongs in APR comparison
A slightly higher nominal rate with low fees can sometimes be cheaper than a lower rate with large upfront charges, especially on short-tenure loans.
5. Quick check
Two lenders have the same rate but one deducts a large processing fee. What should you compare?
