1. NBFCs provide financial services without being banks

NBFCs can specialise in vehicle finance, consumer finance, housing, microfinance, gold or business lending depending on their permitted activities.

Tip: NBFC does not mean unregulated fintech.

2. Banks and NBFCs have different permissions

NBFCs do not operate exactly like banks or automatically accept demand deposits like ordinary savings accounts. Deposit-taking permissions, where applicable, are specific and regulated.

Note: Do not assume an NBFC product has bank-deposit insurance.

3. Specialisation can create different underwriting

An NBFC may serve a borrower or collateral type that a bank is less focused on. Flexibility or speed does not guarantee lower borrowing cost.

Tip: Compare APR and terms, not only approval speed.

4. Verify the entity before borrowing

Check RBI regulated-entity information and the lender's official website. If an app is involved, identify the regulated bank or NBFC legally providing the loan.

Note: A brand name or app listing is not proof of lending authority.

5. Quick check

A loan app does not identify the regulated lender. What should you do?
